Employing Migrant/Overseas Workers: An Employer's Guide
Foreword
The employment of migrant and overseas workers has become an increasing trend within many employment sectors in Northern Ireland. It is a trend which is set to continue, primarily due to a shortage of labour and skills within the local market and the willingness and availability of migrant/overseas workers to come and settle here.
It is widely acknowledged that valuing diversity enables all organisations, whatever their size or purpose, to meet their full business and social potential. It is also important that racism is eliminated in the workplace. Failure to tackle this real issue will create disharmonious and unproductive working environments which can only have a negative impact on our economy.
Better awareness and understanding of the issues associated with the employment of migrant workers will play an important part in responding to these challenges. This guide has been developed for you in order to help meet your needs as an employer and should be read in conjunction with the Voluntary Code of Practice on Employing Migrant/Oversees Staff in Northern Ireland. It is hoped that you will find the guide useful and informative and that it will assist you in the deployment of this valuable resource.
The guide has also been designed for easy reference and will be updated from time to time to ensure that all the information contained within it continues to be relevant in the future.
